This is a major disaster in which a ferry Ferry Sewol (a member of Cheonghaejin Marine Co.) departed from Incheon's coastal passenger terminal on April 15, 2014 and was heading to Jeju Island sank in waters near Byeongpung Island in Jindo County, South Jeolla Province, on April 16, causing 304 deaths and Of the 476 passengers on board, only 172 survived, with 304 dead or missing.

In particular, 324 second-year students from Danwon High School in Ansan, who went on a field trip to Jeju Island, were on board, causing great damage to young students.

The sinking began at around 8:49 a.m. on April 16 on the port side due to what is believed to be a sharp upset. Even during the sinking, however, only broadcasts of "stay still" were repeated on board, and rescue efforts were not carried out.

As such, the disaster led to the worst man-made disaster due to the delay in initial response time due to awkward communication between the captain and crew members, the Coast Guard's passive structure and the government's handling of the aftermath.
